You can confirm that Anaconda is installed and working withAnaconda Navigator or conda.

Close and open your terminal window for the Anaconda installation to take effect. To control whether or not each shell session has the base environment activated or not, run conda config-set autoactivatebase False or True. To run conda from anywhere without having the base environment activated by default, use conda config-set autoactivate.

Anaconda Navigator is a graphical user interface that is automaticallyinstalled with Anaconda. Navigator will open if the installation was successful.If Navigator does not open, review our help resources.

  • Windows: Click Start, search or select Anaconda Navigator from the menu.

  • macOS: Click Launchpad, select Anaconda Navigator. Or, use Cmd+Space to openSpotlight Search and type “Navigator” to open the program.

If you prefer using a command line interface (CLI), you canuse conda to verify the installation using Anaconda Prompt on Windowsor terminal on Linux and macOS.

To open Anaconda Prompt:

  • Windows: Click Start, search, or select Anaconda Prompt from the menu.

  • macOS: Cmd+Space to open Spotlight Searchand type “Navigator” to open the program.

  • Linux–CentOS: Open Applications - System Tools - terminal.

  • Linux–Ubuntu: Open the Dash by clicking the upper left Ubuntu icon, then type “terminal”.

After opening Anaconda Prompt or the terminal, choose any of thefollowing methods to verify:

  • Enter condalist.If Anaconda is installed and working, this will display a list ofinstalled packages and their versions.
  • Enter the command python. This command runs the Python shell. If Anaconda is installed and working, the version information it displays when it starts up will include “Anaconda”. To exit the Python shell, enter the command quit().
  • Open Anaconda Navigator with the command anaconda-navigator. If Anaconda is installed properly, Anaconda Navigator will open.

As of this release, MFiX has been tested on the latest version of MacOS at thetime of this release, 10.14 (Mojave). Earlier of MacOS are likely to work. Ifyou have an issue running MFiX on your Mac, ask for help at Support Forum.

2.2.1. Install Anaconda¶

Download the Python 3, Mac version of Anaconda (~500 MB download) or Miniconda (~50 MB download). Eitherthe Graphical Installer or Command Line Installer would work.

For instance, with the Anaconda Graphical Installer:

  1. Open up Finder and navigate to the Download directory.

  2. Double-click the downloaded file. (At the time of this writing,Anaconda3-2021.05-MacOSX-x86_64.pkg for Graphical Installer).

  3. Follow the installation guide, using the default settings.

2.2.2. Install MFiX¶

After installing Anaconda, install MFiX:

  1. Open a Terminal (Type “⌘-Spacebar”, type “terminal”)

  2. Browse to MFiX Download (requires registration and login)

  3. Copy the conda command

  4. Paste it in the Terminal.


If you already installed MFiX, you may see the following message. Select y to confirm.

MFiX will be installed in a new conda environment. The process will take a fewminutes to complete.

2.2.3. Install Solver Build Dependencies¶

Build dependencies are needed for building a Custom Solver.

Building the MFiX solver requires:

  • Fortran 2003 compiler (GFortran 4.8 or later)

  • CMake

  • For DMP support, an MPI implementation (such as OpenMPI)

Homebrew is the recommended way to install MFiX build dependencies. Go tothe Homebrew website and follow the installationinstructions.

Once Homebrew is installed, install the build dependencies:

  1. Open a Terminal (Type “⌘-Spacebar”, type “terminal”)

  2. Run brewinstallgcccmakeopen-mpi

Activating a conda environment sets certain environment variables such asPATH in the current shell. It does not create a new shell session.

You will need to activate the environment every time before running MFiX.

2.2.5. Deactivate Conda Environment¶

After using MFiX you can just exit to leave the Terminal session. However, ifyou need to deactivate the mfix-21.3 conda environment, you can do so with:
